Notes

One of the first projects I undertook when starting at Durham University in October 2020 was for the University’s lateral flow testing (LFT) programme.  There was a need to produce an educational video to enable students to take and test their own LFTs.  I produced an animated explainer using Adobe After Effects incorporating Clark & Mayer’s multimedia design principles – particularly the modality, segmenting, personalisation, contiguity and redundancy principles (Clark & Mayer, 2011).

The final video was embedded into Blackboard and delivered alongside a quiz.  This has been viewed over 16,000 times within the University population, and 47,000 times via the University YouTube channel.  It was instrumental in promoting the safety of students and staff on campus.

After this project, I wrote a detailed retrospective for my blog, which goes into the project brief, development stages and principles used in the design.

When tested against live instruction from a doctor, student performance on the quiz was comparable. They further reported that “students who trialled it…were very happy with it, [and] engaged strongly with it…”
